The Ultimate Guide to Fishing The Florida Keys

Reef, Wreck & Offshore Fishing from Marathon
There aren't many fishing destinations where you can work a reef, drop on a wreck, and make a run into serious blue water without changing vacation destinations.
That's what makes fishing the Florida Keys different.
And right in the middle of it all is Marathon.
Whether you're bringing the family out for a half day or you're here specifically to chase big fish offshore, Marathon gives you access to a lot of different fishing in a relatively small area.
Why Is Fishing in the Florida Keys So Good?
Look at the Florida Keys on a map and you'll understand a big part of it.
You've got the Atlantic on one side, Florida Bay and the Gulf side on the other, a long reef system offshore, wrecks and structure, and deep blue water farther out.
That gives us options.
Instead of every charter doing the same kind of fishing in the same kind of water, a day can be built around the conditions, season, experience level of the group, and what you're hoping to catch.
That's a big reason anglers keep coming back.

Why Fish from Marathon?
Marathon sits in the Middle Keys, putting you in a good position to experience several different kinds of Florida Keys fishing.
For us, that can mean working reef and wreck structure or heading farther offshore toward fishing grounds like the Humps, the Ups and Downs, and The Ledge.
It also means you don't have to dedicate your entire Florida Keys vacation to fishing just to get a trip in.
A half-day trip can fit into a family vacation. A full day gives us more time and more options. And if fishing is the reason you came down here, we can make a serious offshore day out of it.
Reef Fishing in the Florida Keys
You don't always need to make a long offshore run to find good fishing.
The reef gives us opportunities to target species such as snapper and grouper while keeping the trip manageable for families, newer anglers, and anybody who doesn't necessarily want to spend all day offshore.
It's hands-on fishing, and when the bite is going, things can happen quickly.
For a lot of visitors, reef fishing is their introduction to fishing the Florida Keys.

Wreck Fishing
Wrecks add another dimension to the fishery.
These structures hold bait and attract bigger predators, giving us opportunities for species such as amberjack along with snapper, grouper, and other fish depending on the conditions and season.
Wreck fishing can also be a good bridge between reef fishing and a dedicated offshore trip.
You get heavier tackle, hard-fighting fish, and a chance to see why structure matters so much down here.
Offshore Fishing from Marathon
Then there's the blue water.
Our longer offshore trips give us the time to run toward productive offshore grounds and hunt fish such as mahi mahi, wahoo, marlin, and other pelagic species when conditions and seasons line up.
This is different fishing than dropping baits on the reef.
We may be covering water, watching birds, looking for current edges and signs of life, trolling, or changing tactics as the day develops.
You don't always know exactly what the ocean is going to hand you. That's part of offshore fishing.

The Humps and Marathon's Offshore Grounds
One of the advantages of fishing from Marathon is access to well-known offshore grounds, including the Humps.
These underwater features create changes in current and water movement that can concentrate bait and attract larger fish.
We also fish areas known locally as the Ups and Downs and The Ledge.
Where we actually go on your trip depends on the weather, conditions, what has been biting, and what kind of trip you've booked.
Captain Johnny has spent more than 30 years fishing these waters. The plan isn't to run to a name on a map. It's to fish where the conditions tell us we should fish.
What Can You Catch Fishing the Florida Keys?
That's one of the most common questions we get, and the answer changes throughout the year.
Around Marathon, our fishing can include:

Florida Keys Fishing by Season
There’s something to fish for year-round in the Florida Keys, but the opportunities change as water temperatures, weather, and migrating fish change throughout the year.
Here’s a general look at what each season can bring around Marathon.
Winter Fishing in the Florida Keys
Winter brings some excellent offshore and reef opportunities.
Sailfish, wahoo, king mackerel, cero mackerel, and cobia are among the seasonal fish associated with the cooler months, while yellowtail and mangrove snapper remain year-round options.
If you're visiting Marathon during winter, don't assume you missed fishing season. This is a year-round fishery, and cooler weather simply changes what we target and where we look.
Spring Fishing in the Florida Keys
Spring is when the list of possibilities really starts growing.
Sailfish and wahoo can still be around while mahi mahi begin showing up offshore. Amberjack, permit, tarpon, and mutton snapper also move into their seasonal windows.
As spring progresses toward summer, the offshore fishery starts looking very different from what we had during the winter months.

Summer Fishing in the Florida Keys
Summer is prime time for some of the fish most visitors associate with a Florida Keys fishing trip.
Mahi mahi are a major offshore target, with blue and white marlin also in their seasonal windows. Grouper, mutton snapper, tarpon, permit, and several other species add even more options depending on where and how we're fishing.
Summer gives us plenty of reasons to look offshore, but the reef and wrecks shouldn't be overlooked.
Fall Fishing in the Florida Keys
Fall is another transition period, and that can make things interesting.
Mahi mahi can continue into the fall while grouper fishing remains an option. As temperatures begin changing, wahoo, sailfish, cobia, and the mackerel species start moving back into their seasonal windows.
Meanwhile, yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, sharks, blackfin tuna, and several other Florida Keys species can be found year-round.
There's Always Something to Fish For
That's one of the biggest advantages of fishing from Marathon.
There isn't one single "Florida Keys fishing season." Different fish move in and out throughout the year, while other species remain available across multiple seasons.
The best target for your trip ultimately depends on when you're here, current conditions, and what's actually biting.
If there's one particular fish you want to catch, tell Captain Johnny when you book. We'll help point you toward the trip that makes the most sense.

FAQs
Half Day vs. Full Day: How Long Should You Fish?
You don't automatically need the longest charter to have a good fishing trip.
Half-Day Fishing
A half day is an easy fit for families, newer anglers, or vacationers trying to fit fishing around everything else they're doing in the Keys.
We can work reef, wreck, and other productive areas without eating up the entire day.

A full day gives Captain Johnny more room to work.
More time means more ability to change areas, try different kinds of fishing, make longer runs, and adjust when the fish make us work for them.
Big Game Offshore
If you're coming to Marathon specifically because you want to get offshore and chase bigger fish, this is the trip built for it.
We can make the run toward offshore grounds including the Humps, the Ups and Downs, and The Ledge and dedicate the day to serious fishing.
